India’s DQ Entertainment Animating New 3D Film Version of ‘The Jungle Book’

As it launches a new feature film division, the India-based animation company DQ Entertainment Ireland Ltd. is greenlighting a new, 3D animated version of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.

The project, budgeted at $45 million, has begun pre-production and is aiming for a theatrical release in 2014.

The movie is being written by Billy Frolick (Madagascar) and co-directored by Jun Falkenstein (The Tigger Movie) and Kevin Johnson, with James Hegedus serving as production designer.

ANNECY — DQ Entertainment, India’s most internationally-skewed and prolific animation house, has signed up Germany’s ZDF Group and Italy’s DeA Kids, to co-produce two of DQE’s flagship 3D TV toon series: “Robin Hood: Mischiefs in Sherwood” and “The New Adventures of Peter Pan.” DeA Kids is the DeAgostini Group’s new three-channel kids TV pay/DTT operation.

As a small boy,Tapaas Chakravarti never had a set group of friends.His father was an employee with the Indian Railways and had to move town every couple of years.So Chakravarti did the next best thing. He created his own set of friends he dreamed up characters and borrowed liberally from his collection of over 4,000 comic books. He had his own world—his very own Neverland.He played Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up.

Some thirty years on,Chakravarti is sitting in his office in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills.He is surrounded by pictures and models of Mickey Mouse,Iron Man,Mowgli and Casper.He exclaims,I’m living my dream! The dreamer-turned-entrepreneur has created a business out of his heroes and fantasy worlds.His company,Hyderabad-based DQ Entertainment is the largest animation company in India.With 3,500 employees,its shop floor is among the largest in the world.

Mowgli in three dimensions could well become the game changer for DQ Entertainment (International). The mischievous boy and his jungle friends from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book will be reborn in a 3D movie, expected to hit the big screen worldwide in 2012.

Hyderabad-based DQ, in which DQ Entertainment plc holds a 75 per cent stake, will produce it. 'The whole ball game could change,' says Tapaas Chakravarti, Chairman, and CEO. He cites Alice in Wonderland, which cost $200 million to make but grossed $1.02 billion, and Avatar, which cost $366 million but collected $2.75 billion. 'These are big numbers and we are talking of time-tested big brands like Jungle Book,' Chakravarti says.

DQE’s ‘Psammy Show’ Heads to China with CCTV Deal

Leading international kids animation company DQE is sending its latest series The Psammy Show to China, via a pickup from state broadcaster CCTV. The show, which is co-produced with Disney Germany and Method Animation (France), will air on the CCTV 14 Kids channel, marking DQ’s big break into the Chinese market and making the show available to tens of millions of potential new young fans.

'We are excited to see the world of Psammy expanding across various mediums in China,' said Tapaas Chakravarti, CEO & MD, DQE Group. 'The Psammy Show has successfully captured young audiences in Europe and we are sure the show will do the same in China, too.'

DQE signs licensing agreement with TV Mania Gmbh to manufacture and distribute Jungle Book apparels

DQE scripts entry in comics & picture novels

DQ Entertainment (DQE), an animation producer, is now making a foray into publishing of comic books and pictorial novels. The company is aiming to produce six comics and two pictorial novels, the publishing rights for which will be given to an international publisher with an Indian presence.

DQ inks deal with France TV

India's DQ Entertainment has signed a deal with France Television for a $12.5 million 3D CGI animation series, 'The New Adventures of Peter Pan,' to be developed by French production companies Method Animation and Story Board Animation, it was announced Tuesday.

AIM-listed DQ Entertainment (DQE), India’s largest animation, gaming and entertainment company, has signed up with M6 Studio France and Method Animation France for the co-production of a TV series based on “Le Petit Nicolas”—“Little Nick.”

“Little Nick,” created by René Goscinny and illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempé, was first published in 1959. Since then this iconic French cartoon has sold over 10 million copies in 30 countries.

Italy’s Rai Com Teams Up With Indian Toon Leader DQ Entertainment On ‘Pio The Chick’ (EXCLUSIVE)

ROME – Italian pubcaster Rai’s Rai Com sales arm has teamed up with India’s animation leader DQ Entertainment to produce of a new toon series called “Pio The Chick,” based on a vastly viral property, in a deal that breaks new ground in several ways.

The deal, sealed at Mipcom in Cannes, marks Rai Com’s first foray into the production of original content. It’s also Rai’s first purely commercial venture, specifically conceived for the international market, rather than for its channels. Rai is Italy’s top broadcaster.

From a production standpoint, “Pio” constitutes an interesting mix of Italian artistry and top Indian toonmaking know-how. The design will be by Italian cartoonist Giorgio Cavazzano, known for his work with Disney and Marvel in Europe. DQ, which acts as an animation subcontractor, co-producer, and increasingly as an IP developer, recently completed production of series including “NFL2″ (Rollman Entertainment for Nick Toons), and “Peter Pan Season 1″ (with France’s Method Animation). Its upcoming productions include “Manav,” a TV movie with Disney India, and “Lassies and Friends,” being co-prodced with DreamWorks Classics.

DQ Taps ‘Jungle Book’ L&M Agents Across the Americas

International kids’ animation producer-distributor DQ Entertainment has appointed new licensing agents for its popular property The Jungle Book, which will now be represented by The Licensing Group Ltd. in North America, CPL for Latin America & Mexico, and CIMCA in Central America. Additionally, Sinecast has been appointed promotional partner for The Jungle Book, Peter Pan and Robin Hood in Turkey.

“The Licensing Group is thrilled to be tapped by DQ Entertainment as the exclusive North America licensing agency for The Jungle Book, a property of extraordinary appeal and quality animation. We look forward to the unique opportunity of expanding the licensing program of this beloved animated television series into a wide variety of children’s categories,” commented Danny Simon, President & CEO of The Licensing Group.

CPL, which also lists Cartoon Network, Fox, Smurfs and Warner Bros. among its brands, will represent merchandise licensing rights for the show in LatAm and Mexico, complementing broadcast success over Globosat and Televisa. CIMCA, which represents brands such as Angry Birds and Nintendo, will represent all L&m categories for Jungle Book across Central America.
